Well cut off my legs and call me shorty. When the results were published and I read that the Gewurztraminer I had swooned over at the 2009 Hawkes Bay WIne Awards was the Babich Gimblett Gravels Gewurztraminer 2007 it was proof positive that blind tasting is the only way to go. The last Babich wine I tasted was an extremely ordinary Viognier (reviewed in an earlier IWM) and I certainly wouldn't have rushed to try any of the other whites in the portfolio. But without seeing the label I was able to judge the wine on its own merits and not bring my prejudice to the tasting table. This is a fabulous wine, deserving of the trophy and an absolute pearler. And at less than $20 from the Babich winery website, it is a steal.
