2009 Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc

Signs of spring already? Well, definitely not in the weather if you happen to live in Taupo but there was a burst of bright sunshine in the ripe tropical fruit coming from my glass last night. Yes, the first 2009 Marlborough Sauvignons are hot out of the tank and if the Villa Maria Private Bin Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is anything to go by, they are looking pretty good. With Private Bin essentially being the entry level in the Villa line up, and often sharply discounted in supermarkets, there is no denying both the value and appeal of this wine. Plenty of classic exuberant Marlborough fruit coupled with crunchy acidity and a rather pleasing wet stone/mineral element, this is a great buy. Sure, it is not the most concentrated wine out there but it perfectly encapsulates the vibrancy and freshness on which the region has based its success - and thus brought a little ray of spring sunshine into a cold winter's night.
