I normally avoid rosés made from Pinot Noir like the plague. I have tasted too many 'saignée' examples, usually made from Burgundy's finest, where winemakers seem to have bled not only the juice, but the very heart and soul out of the wine too. Propped up by residual sweetness, an underlying stalky, unripe character always shines through.
But after a particularly stressful day I felt like a glass of undemanding wine and my eye fell upon the 2008 Neudorf Kina Rosé. Very pale salmon pink colour, an inviting nose of summer pudding and red cherry and a subtle, juicy strawberry fruit flavour (undoubtedly with a teensy hint of sweetness), I'd had two glasses before I knew it. Top stuff.
(ps. the accompanying photo is of Evechinus chloroticus aka kina. Not sure why the wine is named after a rather ugly small sea urchin - a particularly good food match ? A Nelson delicacy ?)
