NV Domaine Chandon Rosé

Last week I was invited to a dinner hosted by Glenn Thompson winemaker at Domaine Chandon.

To emphasise how various textures affect our senses, Glenn presented each taster with five mounds of rice (plain, salty, sweet, sharp and oily) and invited us to try each type of rice and see how our perception of the sparkling wines changed. I find sparkling wines quite difficult to judge and instead rely on a combination of sensory evaluation and sheer appeal.

I diligently made notes for a while but after a long arduous day I gave up the exercise and instead concentrated on which wine I found most enjoyable to drink. Whilst the ZD Zero Dosage seemed to be the favourite around the table my heart was won by the NV Domaine Chandon Rosé. The first release of this wine, it had a vibrant pale pink colour, with aromas of strawberry, red cherry and a hint of fruits of the forest. Rich, dry and satisfying this is not an overly complex wine but one with masses of exuberance and appeal.
