One of my favourite aspects of teaching wine classes is the opportunity to show the students wines that tErdener Markus Molitorhey may never have tasted before. Some wine styles are hard work (Fino Sherry is always an uphill struggle) whilst others, like white Burgundy, quickly find new admirers.
Last week's class focussed on sweet and sparkling wines and in a fit of madness I bought a half bottle of Markus Molitor's 2003 Erdener Treppchen Beerenauslese. Still unbelievably pale in colour, with an aroma of blossom, greengage, white peach and fresh apricot. The palate wasn't as rich as I expected, bright mineral acidity providing a counterpoint to the sweetness. Really not luscious enough to serve as a dessert wine, in fact I think it would be a pity to blur the precise flavours with food. Instead I'd prefer to drink this wine by itself, so as to appreciate the crystalline fruit character. This was one of the most enjoyable rieslings I have tasted for a long time but unfortunately the class thought so too, so there was no second glass for me . . .
