Any time of the year is a good one for dessert wines as far as I am concerned but it does seem that the colder winter nights are particularly suited to this lush, intensely rich style of wine. If you have never discovered the heady delights of Sauternes, from France's Bordeaux region, then this is an excellent entry-level wine to get you started. The second wine of the famed Chateau Rieussec, it is made predominantly from Semillon with some Sauvignon Blanc and offers complex aromas and flavours of pineapple, apricot, almond blossom, marmalade and spice, all wrapped up in a richly honeyed cocoon, which never becomes cloying thanks to the finely balanced acidity and oak. It may not be quite as complex or intense as the top label but at this price, it's an absolute bargain.
